After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English and African American studies. As studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence of a particular Jury member. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio, right after graduating from the college. In this role, she launched her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
